Children enjoy as they play traditional games at Katara.
Doha: The Cultural Village Foundation, Katara, Ramadan activities continue to draw attraction to the public. Among these include Katara PlayStation Championship, Old Folk Games, and Checker Games.
The Katara PlayStation semi-final competitions will start today and the championship will be tomorrow, April 22. The participants have been divided into two groups. The winners of the first place in the two groups will face each other to determine the first and second place, while the second place winners from the two groups will face to determine the position. Third and fourth prizes will be distributed to the first five places. To date, out of 300 participants, eight have qualified for the competition.
Among other Katara’s Ramadan activities that attracted both the young and old are folk games which according to the Foundation is aimed to promote and revive folklore and introduce young people to it.
Meanwhile, on the southern side of Katara at the theatre, people enjoy the daily scenes inspired by the heritage of the old folk games that children used to play in Al Furjan. A group of children in traditional clothes participate in these performances and chant traditional songs. This event is of interest to Qatari children and families. Parents who accompanied their children expressed their happiness that their children got to know these games and said that following these shows made them nostalgic recalling their childhood memories. They also thanked Katara as they provided an avenue for this kind of activity.
During Ramadan nights, adults compete for the checker games, both beginners and professionals joined in this activity. The championship for this game will be held on April 21 and 22, and first place winner in the professional category will win QR6,000; second placer, QR5,000; and third placer, QR4,000. Under the Junior category, first placer will receive QR5,000; second placer, QR4,000 and third placer, QR3,000.
