A new book highlighting the early modern architecture in Qatar, “Discovering Arabian Deco”, was unveiled at a ceremony in Bin Jelmood House, Msheireb Museums, on Tuesday.
The author, Ibrahim Mohamed Jaidah, takes readers on an architectural journey of urban development in Qatar covering the three most significant decades between the 1950s and 1970s.
Jaidah, who is an award-winning architect, told reporters on the sidelines of the book launch and signing that “Discovering Arabian Deco” documents among others, the first school, first apartment building and first bank in the country. “The unique thing that I discovered - there was a deco-style architecture and I call that ‘Arabian deco’ because it has palm trees, eagles, so I think it’s so unique and it’s something I want to feature.”
He disclosed possessing an extensive collection of architectural design photographs captured over the last three decades within the country, which are showcased in the book. In response to the similarities found in Arab deco, he asserted that nothing comparable has been observed in the region, making it an exclusive feature of Qatar. “There is nothing like I’ve seen in the region, so I think it’s unique to Qatar.”
The “Discovering Arabian Deco” is the fourth book published by Jaidah. The book includes a magnificent collection of photographs and drawings and highlights the architectural changes that took place in Doha from 1950s to 1970s.
Abdulla Al Naama, Manager of Msheireb Museums, said: “We are proud to host the book launching of one of the renowned Qatari architects and authors. Our hosting of the event reiterates our mission of supporting the creative community and offering them a platform to reach out to the wider community.
Besides, the book will be available in Msheireb Museums’ library to allow researchers, academics, students, and readers to purchase or have more information about our rich legacy. This is a crucial step to document and preserve our heritage for the coming generations.”
“Discovering Arabian Deco" covers the urban transition of the 1950s, the urban necessity of the 1960s, and the urban modernity of the 1970s. The historical events of these decades have significantly shaped the evolution of the city. Additionally, the book also sheds light on the 1960s movement called “Arabian Deco” created by the author.
The book is available in Msheireb Museum’s gift shop, located on the ground floor of Bin Jelmood House. It can also be purchased online via Amazon.
Along with the unveiling of the new book, an exhibit showcasing the subject was also opened at the museum. The exhibit showcases highlights from the book through 3D-printed models and architectural illustrations that focus on buildings from the Arabian Deco era.
The book and exhibition are a tribute to Qatar’s architectural history and highlight the significance of Arabian Deco. The publication and exhibition provide an excellent opportunity for architecture enthusiasts to explore and learn about early modern architecture in Qatar.
