Doha: Google joins Qatar National Day celebrations with a doodle of the Qatar's flag featured on its homepage on Wednesday (December 18).

Doodles are spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays. Only visible in Qatar, the doodle shows a gif of Qatar flag against the background of a rising sun. It wrote on its doodle page, "The doodle celebrates Qatar's National Day, marking 141 years since its unification".

On December 18, 1878, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohamed bin Thani succeeded his father as the ruler of Qatar. With that, Qatar became a country with a vision… a country that would find unity, grow rapidly, and reach toward ever higher heights.

National Day, also known as Founder's Day, celebrates the rise of Sheikh Jassim as the father and founder of the State of Qatar. The National Day celebrations give people an occasion to honour the history and identity of their country, and to commemorate those who have worked and continue to work to make Qatar a great nation.

The 18th of December is a special day – a day of unity for the people of Qatar.
