Officials addressing a press conference to announce the names of schools qualified for ‘Ancestral Meadows: A Matter of Trust’ event, which will be part of Qatar National Day (QND) celebrations this year.
Doha: The State National Day Celebrations Organising Committee yesterday announced the names of the schools qualified to participate in ‘Ancestral Meadows: A Matter of Trust’ event which will be held under the celebration of Qatar National Day (QND) this year.
This event, the first of its kind, comes out of the vision of the National Day of the State for promoting loyalty, solidarity, unity and pride in the Qatari national identity, and an affirmation of the values of the Committee, which include participation, inspiration, creativity and transparency, and in line with this year’s theme for celebration of QND, ‘Ancestral Meadows: A Matter of Trust’.
The qualified schools are Al Karaana Common School for Girls, Al Andalus Primary School for Girls, Al Nahda Primary School for Girls, Qatar-Finland International Private School, Abdullah bin Jassim Primary School for Boys, and Umm Al Qura Primary School for Boys.
The announcement of the qualified schools came after a raffle draw was held for the schools participating in the preliminary qualifiers. The raffle draw resulted in the qualification of three schools for boys, and the same number for girls.
This is after 16 public and private schools in Qatar including eight schools for boys and the same number for girls, participated in the preliminary qualifiers for the event, which took place yesterday at the headquarters of Qatar Women’s Sport Committee.
The event is an environmental initiative open to all school students in Qatar from the fifth and sixth grades in the primary stage, and it includes specific environmental areas, and an environmental initiative has been identified for each school, which directs and supervises the participating schools.
This event brings together environmental activists running initiatives and youngsters to provide them with environmental skills and behaviour to protect and preserve the environment, and guide them to use and exploit natural resources, with the aim of consolidating the concept of environmental sustainability and achieving Qatar Vision 2030, in relation to the fourth environmental pillar, as well as to enhance the Qatari national identity.
Speaking at an event organised yesterday to announce the names of the qualified schools, Executive Director of the Friends of the Environment Center and Head of ‘Ancestral Meadows: A Matter of Trust’ event Farhoud Al Hajri said another raffle draw was held to determine the initiators of each school, to be added to the raffle draw that was held previously to select the qualified schools to participate in the event.
Head of the Education Sector Department, Samira Al Yazidi at State National Day Celebrations Organising Committee said that each school was assigned to prepare a presentation related to one of the concepts of the environment, and these presentations were presented before the jury in order to select the best schools, and in return provide enriching information to the students regarding the environment.
Director of the Waste Recycling and Management Department and a member of the jury committee for the event, Eng. Hamad Jassim Al Bahr said that the event aims at sending messages to students about the importance of preserving the environment, in terms of waste recycling, planting trees, increasing the green area, not depleting natural resources and reusing the products.
