Doha: Dr. Alpna Mittal, wife of the Indian Ambassador, inaugurated the Indian Silk and Ethnic Wear Festival at Lulu Hypermarket, Al Gharafa branch, yesterday, on the sidelines of the ongoing ‘India Utsav 2021’ in celebration of the 75th Independence Day of India.
The festival is showcasing a wide assortment of pure natural and synthetic silks from India including saris, readymade garments and ethnic wear like salwar-kameez, kurtas and churidars with exciting offers.
Indian silk has a significant role to play in the Indian export sector, and it is considered as one of the major categories of India’s exports worldwide. According to the statistics of the Indian Silk Export Promotion Council (ISEPC), India’s annual silk exports stood at $265.77m in the FY 2020-2021.
It emerged as one of the major industries of the country that employs a large manpower and a prominent player in the export market. The Council, a semi-government organisation that regulates the export of Indian silk and its products, now has more than 1800 exporters as its members.
India’s silk, which has a history of over 5,000 years, is now produced in many centres scattered in 24 states across the country, each having its own speciality. As one of the finest products of India, silk is regarded as a fabric woven into the history of the country.
