Qatari schools are taking part in an Educational Network organised by the American School of Doha (ASD), in order to help other centers approach subjects like Mathematics in a new way. This project was put together in partnership with the Supreme Education Council (SEC) and the US Embassy.
The principal of Middle School at ASD, Dr Steven Leever, who is in charge of the programme that began in April of 2012 and will conclude in May 2013. Leever explained to The Peninsula that last year, with the assistance of the SEC, 75 local educators spent the day at ASD observing classes and talking to teachers.
At the end of the day, organisers surveyed the participants about the experience and decided to target one specific subject area to bring a focus to the partnership, the selected subject was Mathematics. Participants also agreed that one visit was not enough, so the program was separated by teams that would visit each division: Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, Middle and High School. Each team consists of an administrator and one or two teachers for a maximum of 12 visiting educators, plus one ASD administrator per division, one or two Math teachers and a central office administrator for a total of 10 educators.
ASD also aims to create dialogue about their curriculum and instruction related to Arabic, Qatari History and Islamic Studies. In this context, Dr Leever clarified that “we are on a continuous path of learning in our school; we know that we will learn as much from our partners as they will learn from us.”
