DOHA: Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani yesterday patronised the ceremony of revealing the design for Lusail Stadium, the venue at which the opening and final matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Qatar.

The ceremony, held at Lusail area last evening, was attended by the President of the Republic of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno Garces; United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres;  President of the United Nations General Assembly, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, and Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Ali Khairi.

H H Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Personal Representative of H H the Amir, also attended the function.

The glittering ceremony was also attended by the Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani and the Shura Council Speaker H E Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud along with a number of Their Excellences Ministers and a lineup of heads of sports federations, Arab and international Olympic committees and members of the press.

The 80,000-capacity venue will be the largest stadium during the tournament, which will kick off on November 21, 2022 and be the first to take place in the Arab world. According to details released by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), renowned British firm Foster + Partners provided the design concept for the stadium.

The venue’s golden vessel takes its inspiration from an Arab architectural sense as much as it does from literal symbolism by celebrating the region’s ancient tradition of craftsmanship. The design features ‘fanar’ lanterns and intricately detailed bowls that have been created for centuries in the region.

Construction of the stadium, which is being delivered by a joint venture comprising Qatari firm HBK Contracting Company and China Railway Construction Corporation, is already well underway.

With the substructure complete, concrete superstructure and infrastructure works are progressing in all zones, while internal works have commenced in the west stand. SPORT 10,11 & 12
