DOHA: The security agencies in the country arrested a gang of seven for fleecing money from people promising antique treasure with gold coins. They also trapped many victims by selling them expensive smart phones at half the price. After robbing the money, they fled from the crime scene.
Brig. Jamal Al Kaabi, Director of Criminal Investigation Department said the CID received information that some people cheated a number of citizens and residents this way. They had claimed that they possessed a good quantity of gold which they wanted to sell at a cheap price.
The fraudsters targeted elderly people and women, both citizens and residents. The owners of cars parked in public places were approached and told that coins worth QR one million were found in an abandoned buildings. Since they cannot sell or use them, the victims were promised the possession.
A search and investigation found that the gang has seven Asians as members playing different roles. Upon arrest, the perpetrators admitted committing fraud.
Lt. Col. Majid Sharida Al Rumaihi, head of the Capital Security Investigation Section, urged citizens and residents not to deal with such gangs and follow legal procedures in buying and selling gold, and through the approved outlets after obtaining permits from the competent authorities.
He also advised not to buy any devices except from known and reliable persons and places, and to inform the security authorities of fraudsters in order to help them ensure the safety of citizens and residents.
