The Ministry of Education and Higher Education is developing an artificial intelligence (AI) strategy for the education sector following the goals of Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030 in the field of AI, said a top official.
“The strategy will focus basically on providing easy access and optimal use of big data in regulating the educational process,” said Eng. Mona Salem Al Fadhli, Director of the Information Systems Department at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
Al Fadhli was speaking in a Qatar Radio programme which hosted several officials and experts to discuss localisation of artificial intelligence in GCC and the Arab world.
She said the strategy aims to develop prediction systems to enhance the ministry’s ability to monitor and control the quality of the educational process through the use of technology represented by artificial intelligence. Through the technology, a prediction system is created using data mining techniques that result in predictive modelling, which helps anticipate future trends.
Al Fadhli said that the process of developing this strategy for the education sector began about a year ago in a bid to provide an AI foundation.
“The AI system which we are developing will be advanced and able to predict the education system’s performance more accurately and direct the Ministry’s efforts effectively,” said Al Fadhli.
She said that the system would help analyse available educational data such as assessing students’ academic performance, monitoring their progress, identifying areas for improvement and providing customised guidance for each student.
She said education is the basis for building students’ capacity, developing their skills, and preparing them to meet the job market requirements, which widely use AI for analysing data, programming, and e-education, among others.
“The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has made real efforts in artificial intelligence. Many skills concepts of artificial intelligence have been introduced into the computing and information technology curriculum,” said Al Fadhli.
According to an international report, AI in education exhibits infinite benefits, such as helping teachers take over time-consuming tasks, grade reports, maintain reports, enhance virtual AI schools and classrooms, and much more.
AI can assist teachers in providing personalised teaching so that students can learn at their own speed. Some well-known educational platforms currently provide customised courses using artificial intelligence.
