Action from the Qatar Stars League match between Al Gharafa and Muaither at Al Gharafa Stadium yesterday.
Al Ahli claimed vital points against troubled Al Wakrah while Muaither came from two goals behind to draw in the Qatar Stars League (QSL) games played yesterday.
Al Ahli, who hovering over the relegation zone, added more woes to Al Wakrah camp handing them a 2-0 loss in their own backyard.
Al Wakrah were badly in need of a win, which could have helped them to climb out of the relegation zone, On the other hand, Al Ahli were looking into ways to get out of the danger zone.
In the 23rd minute, Al Ahli’s Ali Ferydoon beat the Al Wakrah goalkeeper at his near post but smashed into the base of the post before bouncing back into the six yard box at pace. Luckily for Al Ahli, the rebound hit Al Wakrah’s Mohamed Arafa who was unable to move out of the way quickly enough and the ball rolled over the line to give Al Ahli a lucky 1-0 lead.
Al Ahli doubled their lead just minutes later when Ferydoon struck again, picking up a loose ball in the 18 yard box after some sloppy defending from Al Wakrah. Ferydoon dropped his shoulder and faked two defenders, leaving them diving for a non-existent shot, before he unleashed a fierce right footed drive into the bottom right hand corner of the goal to make it two to The Brigadiers with 27 minutes on the clock.
There were ample opportunities for both sides but at the end, it was Al Ahli who prevailed at the Al Wakrah Stadium.
Elsewhere, Muaither came from two goals behind to secure a vital point to boost their hopes against relegation with a 2-2 draw against Al Gharafa. Pedro Caixina’s side raced into a two goal lead thanks to Rashid Sumaila and Kooky Han before being pegged back in the second half as Muaither got the points through Bruno Aguiar and Nasser Al Nassr. Al Gharafa were looking good in the early stage of the game. In the 37th minute, a well worked free-kick routine fell to midfielder Kooky Han, who drilled the ball across the penalty area and found Rashid Sumaila who knocked the ball home from close range.
Just two minutes later, Al Gharafa doubled their lead though South Korean midfielder Kooky Han, giving them a comfortable 2-0 lead at half time.
However, Muaither showed signs of a strong comeback in the second half. Muaither found their way back into the game through a penalty. Defender Bruno Aguiar stepped up and scored his first goal of the season. In the 71st minute, substitute Nasser Al Nassr netted the equaliser with a powerful kick which sailed past Yusef Hassan.
Both sides looked for a winner in the later part of the game, but the referee blew the final whistle, confirming the two-all stalemate.
In another match, Umm Salal and Shahaniya shared points in an one-all draw.
