Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), installed over 80 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations around World Cup stadiums and other key places last month.

The new EV charging stations will help significantly cut  carbon emissions and contribute to country's efforts to host the first carbon-neutral FIFA World Cup.

“Beating the clock, Kahramaa installed 80+ EV stations in October, near the 8 stadiums & across the country, getting ready for the biggest sporting event - FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 - the 1st carbon-neutral World Cup ever,” the utility company said in a tweet.

The installation of EV charging stations is a contribution of Kahramaa to the FIFA World Cup 2022 Sustainability Strategy, which aims at delivering a tournament that sets new benchmarks for social, human, economic and environmental development.

This tournament will change the way future FIFA World Cup competitions and other sporting mega-events are organised. It will build a lasting, sustainable legacy that contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030.

Following QNV2030, Kahramaa aims to build up to 1,000 fast charging stations by 2025 across the country.

Speaking to Al Rayyan TV recently, Mohammed Al Sharshani, Head of Electric Vehicles’ Unit at Kahramaa, explained procedures of installing EV charging stations at public and private places.

“The applicants can submit their requests to the department concerned at Kahramaa. The Steering Committee of the National Strategy for Charging Stations for Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in Qatar assess the applications to give approval for installing the charging station.”

He said owners of electric private vehicles can apply for installing EV charging station at Building Permit Unit at Customer Service Department of Kahramaa.

“There are two types of electric car charging station — AC and DC. AC charging stations which are being installed in residential areas for owners of private vehicles take longer times from 7 to 8 hours for charging a car,” said Al Sharshani. He said DC fast charging stations, being installed by Kahramaa near World Cup stadiums, petrol stations, Metro stations and other such places, take 30 to 40 minutes to charge a vehicle.
