Doha: A jewellery collection named Al Maha which raises awareness on Down Syndrome has been launched during the Doha Jewellery & Watches Exhibition (DJWE) currently taking place at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center.

“The collection is full of love as it captivates with its tender designs. It’s studded with precious gemstones like Ruby & Emerald,” said Al Darwish Jewellery on their Instagram post. The Al Maha collection can be seen at Araya Modern High Jewellery, a fifth generation private jewellers specialising in crafting exceptional modern high jewellery.

Al Darwish Jewellery explained that: “Sondos and her peers were an inspiration for us to launch Al Maha Collection which celebrates those who are diagnosed with Down Syndrome. This collection has one precious gemstone in each design which reflects the additional chromosome in those diagnosed with Down Syndrome.”

In an Instagram video posted by Al Darwish Jewellery, Sondos whom they are referring to spoke about her gladness towards it, who is wearing the Al Maha collection while speaking in the video. “I love this line of jewellery “Al Maha,”and I loved its varied shapes and sizes,” she said.

Araya Modern High Jewellery said in a statement: “Using jewellery as a powerful means of storytelling comes our Al Maha Collection designed to raise awareness about Down Syndrome. This genetic chromosomal disorder that occurs in one out of every 1,000 births worldwide is caused by the presence of an extrachromosome which makes that person special.

“We’ve captured the uniqueness brought about by this one extra chromosome by translating it into ‘One-Stone’ designs throughout this collection. Each of these pieces is hand-made in our atelier by our expert craftsman. The lace work as the structure of our DNA together is what binds this collection to the cause. Every jewellery item has multiple versions. The intention behind this collection is to amplify the acknowledgment, honouring the diversity and to embrace the differences that make us truly special. We have added emerald and ruby stones to the already existing diamond collection. Each piece reflects its uniqueness and can be worn and cherished everyday. We hope that together we can spread awareness, one bracelet at a time,” it added.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defined Down Syndrome as a condition wherein a person has an extra chromosome. “Chromosomes are small “packages” of genes in the body. They determine how a baby’s body forms and functions as it grows during pregnancy and after birth. Typically, a baby is born with 46 chromosomes. Babies with Down Syndrome have an extra copy of one of these chromosomes, chromosome 21.”

United Nations estimates that each year, approximately 3,000 to 5,000 children are born with this chromosome disorder.

Al Darwish Jewellery is among the over 500 exhibitors participating for this year’s 18th DJWE which will culminate on Saturday, May 14. A leading pioneer in jewellery designs with precious gemstones since 2016, it is showcasing top jewellery brands including Moratti, Kiswah, Bishan, Nafees, ARAYA, Raaya, RK Jewellers, Château Euphorie, Liebe, N.M Creations, Motilal Jewellers, and Kotharis Jewelry.
