Doha: There has been a significant transformation in consumer attitudes, shown in the shifting behaviours towards single-use plastic and reducing carbon footprint.

The pandemic has accelerated this trend and has shown that consumers will continue to base their decisions on which brands and businesses to buy based on their ethical and sustainable credentials.

In response to this, and as part of its mission to be a sustainable, responsible, self-sufficient business, Carrefour launched its first Qatari Festival in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2020. The initiative was born to support local farmers by featuring their produce across a select number of Carrefour stores.

The Festival highlighted and featured produce from prominent local farms, namely Safwa, Khodra, Mazzrati, QT farm, Nabati, QADCO, and Agrico. Laurent Hausknecht, Country Manager of Carrefour Qatar, commented on Carrefour’s ongoing commitment to creating value for its industry and economy by supporting local farming and the supply chain.

“Through this campaign, Carrefour aims to celebrate the successes of Qatar’s local products, which continue to grow in variety and quality and enhance their presence in the market.

“As one of the region’s largest retailers, it is important that we form close partnerships with all local economic operators. By supporting farmers in Qatar and featuring more of their products, we are not only giving our customers the chance to buy the freshest ingredients but also encouraging them to support their local economy,” said Hausknecht.

“The event was a success, and we witnessed positive growth with the amount of local vegetable produce sales increasing to 50 percent in comparison to last year,” he added.

By highlighting locally sourced produce, Carrefour continues to encourage customers to be more conscious of where their food is sourced from while providing them the opportunity to buy fresh, high quality, and sustainably produced food from local farms at best possible value.

Carrefour Qatar’s contributions to the Food Safety Programme have played a significant role in the country’s move towards self-sufficiency and food security over the past four years. Choosing healthy food produced locally and sustainably makes it possible to reduce carbon emissions and combat global warming and boost the local economy. Carrefour aims to continue giving back by supporting the local market, thereby contributing to the nation’s economic and environmental development, both of which are key pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030.
