Doha, Qatar: With the advent of the holy month of Ramadan, Katara transforms into an exceptional destination that seamlessly blends spirituality, culture and entertainment. Visitors are immersed in a unique Ramadan atmosphere that harmoniously combines tradition and modernity in one place.
Ramadan in Katara is characterised by its serene spiritual ambiance. Tarawih prayers are held at the Katara Mosque, and the recitation of the Quran fills the air with tranquillity. Religious lectures, remembrance sessions and Quran memorisation programmes for children further enhance the atmosphere of faith, reflecting the values of Islam.
Katara celebrates the holy month through a variety of cultural events that showcase Qatari and Arab heritage. Among these are several competitions, including the Katara Nabati and Classical Poetry Competitions on the Night of Power. Entries are accepted from March 11 to 18, and participants can submit their verses—whether in classical or Nabati poetry—by commenting on the competition announcement tweet on Katara’s X platform. Winners will receive prizes, with first place awarded QR5,000, second place QR3,000 and third place QR2,000.
Additionally, Katara hosts the Katara Prize for Arabic Poetry, now in its fourth edition, which this year honours Umm Salama Hind bint Abi Umayya Al Makhzoumi, one of the mothers of the Believers and among the earliest converts to Islam. Other notable events include the Katara Short Story Competition, themed around brotherhood, and the Katara Prize for Quran Recitation in its eighth edition, organised under the patronage of the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs.
Beyond spiritual and cultural activities, Katara offers a range of entertainment and sports events. These include the Katara Beach Volleyball Championship, the Katara Ramadan Chess Championship (an international event), the Katara Ramadan Fishing Competition for Qatari youth under 16, and the inaugural Katara Ramadan Football Championship for the Foundation’s employees.
The Ramadan Village, located in the southern part of Katara, provides a space for shopping and showcasing handicrafts in a charming heritage setting reminiscent of traditional Qatari neighbourhoods. In collaboration with the Sheikh Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center, Katara is hosting a virtual reality event titled “A Journey to Mecca Through Time” as part of the Katara Tech Forum. This event runs until March 21, from 8 PM to midnight, in the Ramadan Village.
Katara’s Library for Arabic Novels in Building 48 hosts literary and intellectual sessions, offering book and knowledge enthusiasts the opportunity to engage with writers, critics, and specialists in literature and creativity.
Katara also continues to produce the beloved series “Tamour and Tamorah”, now in its fifth season, airing daily during Ramadan on Qatar TV at 2:45pm.
Among the most cherished Ramadan traditions at Katara are the Musaharati and the Iftar Cannon, both of which are revived annually.
