Sustainable development need plans based on scientific foundations

Doha: Minister of Municipality H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie affirmed that the State of Qatar, under the directives of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, pays great attention to the development of economic sectors in the country in general and the agricultural sector in particular, since it is one of the vital sectors of realizing food security.

The Ministry of Municipality, in its relentless pursuit towards achieving the states goals in this regard, has taken all measures to achieve the goals of food security, as it is one of the main and important pillars pushed for by the state to achieve during this period in proportion to the great renaissance the country is witnessing at all levels, the Municipality Minister said in his speech at the opening of the 9th International Agricultural Exhibition (AgriteQ) and the 3rd International Environmental Exhibition (EnviroteQ) today at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center.

He noted that the Ministry of Municipality had an important responsibility to develop the agricultural sector in the country and achieve sustainable development, which contributes effectively to achieving food security through increasing local production to reduce the gap between production and local consumption; consequently, raising the level of self-sufficiency in agricultural products that Qatar enjoys a comparative advantage in its production. The Minister stressed that preservation and sustainably developing Qatar’s environment for future generations must be taken into consideration as well as conserving the country’s natural resources, especially those related to the elements of land and water.

The Minister of Municipality pointed out that sustainable development could only come through the development of policies and plans based on well-studied scientific foundations, so those sound decisions are taken that encourage the process of economic progress in the country, noting that the strategy of agriculture and food security in the country is based on achieving self-sufficiency, securing food supply chains, strategic storage, and international trade inspired by the lofty vision of the wise leadership and Qatar National Vision 2030, which seek to achieve self-sufficiency in the state in all aspects of food, through holding international exhibitions that are a forum for farmers, producers and those interested as well as production companies and consumers.

He stated that Qatar used renewable energies to apply best practices for the development of the agricultural sector, made better use of limited natural resources, strived to preserve the environment, stabilized markets for agricultural food products, developed investment in the agricultural and fish fields, and provided guarantees for the private sector to invest in this field, stressing that the food security of the State of Qatar is part of the food security in its Arab, regional and international surroundings.
