Qatari athletes continued to shine at the 5th GCC Women's Games with their athletics team bagging an aggregate of 21 medals to finish the competition on high in Doha on Saturday.
The tally from the home side includes four gold medals and 10 silver besides a total of seven gold medal.
UAE finished the athletics competition on top after winning seven gold, one silver and four bronze medals. Bahrain finished second after claiming 14 medals including 6 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze medals.
It was a dramatic final day of athletics competition which saw nail-biting battles among the athletes vying for top honours.
The Qatari athletes who gained the highest number of medals (21) in the track and field could have finished the athletics competition on top but some of their athletes ran out of luck and had to content with silver after coming close to winning their respective finals.
The hosts also displayed an impressive performance in shooting events with their shooters earning a total of 18 medals including eight gold, six silver and four bronze medals.
Around 900 athletes from four Gulf countries, Bahrain, Oman, UAE and hosts Qatar are taking part in the event which will conclude on March 17.
The female athletes are competing in 10 games: basketball, handball, table tennis, volleyball, chess, athletics, archery, fencing, taekwondo and bowling.
The opening ceremony of the Games, held under the patronage of H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani was held at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex last Tuesday.
