Doha: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has released 51,000 baby black seabreams, locally called ‘Al Sham’, weighing 5gm each in Qatari sea to enrich the strategic stock of the fish.

The Ministry had earlier released 24,300 baby Hamours in two batches in Qatari sea for the same purpose.

The baby fish was produced in the Aquatic Research Canter of MME at Ras Matbakh under the project which aims to increase strategic stock of local fish species with economic value, said Ministry in a statement.

The balck seabream fingerlings were released in two batches – 21,000 in the first batch and 30,000 in the next batch.

The release was conducted under the supervision of a team from the Aquatic Research Canter. Over 200,000 baby black seabream will be released in the sea as per the plan of MME.

The project is part of the second national development programme 2018-20 of national resources. The ambitious programme helps the Fish Affairs Department at MME in implementing the project of releasing larvae of local fish in high demand to ensure food security in the country.

The black seabream is a Sparidae fish species. They are recognisable by their oval compressed body and jaws containing 4-6 rows of slender teeth which are larger at the front. They are silvery in colour with blue and pink tinges and broken longitudinal gold lines. They can reach a maximum size of 60 cm in length.
