Qatar Press Center holds workshop on 'Protection of Journalists in Armed Conflicts'

Doha: Qatar Press Center organized on Sunday a workshop entitled 'Protection of journalists in times of armed conflicts', in cooperation with Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in presence of President of QRCS Yousef bin Ali Al Khater, Head of ICRC Mission in Qatar Cherine Pollini, along with a host of media personnel and journalists.

The workshop saw the opening of an art exhibition that included a number of paintings expressing issues of freedoms and rights of peoples and individuals.

In his opening speech, President of the Qatar Press Center Saad Mohammed Al Rumaihi said that the role assigned to the Qatar Press Center has begun to bear fruit with such seminars and workshops, which emphasize the important role of the center in providing training and qualification opportunities through seminars and lectures for all segments of society.

For his part, President of QRCS Yousef bin Ali Al Khater said in his speech that this workshop is one of a series of lectures and workshops organized by QRCS, in cooperation with various partner agencies, as part of its annual program to introduce international humanitarian law, human rights, and humanitarian diplomacy, to spread this culture among members of society and its groups, with a focus on youth, young adults, and the professional sectors that are more concerned with this aspect, such as the press and media sector.

For her part, Head of ICRC Mission in Qatar Cherine Pollini indicated that the committee and its programs usually target people who are affected by wars and violence and seek their assistance and protection. The Committee is an independent and impartial organization with 160 years of experience and coordinates with international organizations such as the Red Crescent and national societies such as the QRCS, where there are 192 national societies around the world and these are reliable entities, which are professional in providing humanitarian aid.

President of the Arab Center for International Humanitarian Law Mohammed Al Nadi reviewed a group of photos that reflect the suffering of journalists and the violations that affect their rights protected under international humanitarian law, noting that this confirms that the journalist is the mirror of society and the witness to the event.
