NEW YORK: John Tavares scored two goals, including one off a steal in overtime, leading the New York Islanders to victory over New Jersey at the Prudential Centre.
Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak made 21 saves to earn his 22nd win of the year. Left winger Josh Bailey scored a goal in the third period to aid in the victory.
Centres Travis Zajac and Scott Gomez each scored a goal for the Devils, and goaltender Keith Kinkaid made 28 saves.
Oilers 5, Blackhawks 2
Edmonton continued its hot streak with stunning 5-2 victory over Chicago.
The Oilers, who have watched too many leads slip through their fingers this season, did not break in the third period against Chicago, scoring twice to turn a 3-2 nail-biter into a three-goal cushion.
After posting just nine wins in the first half of the season, the Oilers started the second half with a bang in improving to 10-23-9.
The Hawks, who were on tired legs after playing in Minnesota on Thursday, fell to 27-13-2.
|Lightning 2, Sabres 1
Centre Steven Stamkos scored the game-winner with 5:18 left in the third period, allowing first-place Tampa Bay to earn a win against reeling Buffalo at Amalie Arena.
The Lightning had jumped out to an early lead on centre Valtteri Filppula’s eighth goal of the season.
Panthers 6, Flames 5
Panthers left-winger Tomas Fleischmann shovelled in the game-winner during a goal-mouth scramble late in the third period, lifting Florida to a 6-5 victory in a game that featured a lot of ugly goals.AGENCIES
