Doha: Intensive efforts by different sectors in the country have resulted in creating awareness about autism spectrum disorder.

It has also helped in minimising possible associated social stigma and an increase in demand for services for people with autism.

“We have seen a greater level of understanding, interest, care, and respect for the diverse profile of people in our community. This is a positive sign, and we must continue to support people with autistic spectrum disorders,” said Executive Director of Special Schools and Special Educational Needs Services, at Qatar Foundation, Mark Hughes.

He was speaking on the sidelines of World Autism Awareness Day on which World Autism Month was launched. The month is a significant opportunity to draw attention to the issues of inclusivity and diversity, and the importance of acceptance for people with autistic spectrum conditions and disorders.

“It is essential that people have a greater understanding of their unique perspective. They epitomise diversity, and we should recognise that they have as important a part to play in our society as anybody else,” said Hughes.

According to Hughes, Qatar Foundation’s Awsaj Academy, a specialised school that addresses the needs of students with mild to moderate learning needs has around 650 young people and Renad Academy a school that helps children with autism has 106 students.

Through multi-tiered systems of support, Awsaj Academy ensures that students receive the necessary behavioural and academic interventions to close learning gaps. It is the only school of its kind in Qatar. Renad Academy provides education and specialised services to students, and training and support to parents.

The school presently serves students aged 3 to 10, but each successive year it will add a grade level until students of all ages can be served.

Due to the increased demand for autistic services and for services for those with learning difficulties four entities of Qatar Foundation offer joint services.

“There is great demand on autistic services and so QF founded the Renad Academy. Now we have a joint venture by Renad Academy, Awsaj Academy, Ability Friendly programme and The Learning Centre to provide special needs services. These four centres are supporting each other and Renad Academy provides special needs services on autism,”  said Public Relations Officer, Pre-University Education at Qatar Foundation, Khalid Kassab.

Kassab said that through a satellite programme the services at of Renad Academy are provided to children in Qatar Foundation schools in areas such as Al Wakra and Al Shamal.  He also said that plans are under way to expand the services at  Renad Academy  and Awsaj academy to public schools.
