Over the years, National Sport Day has inspired people to stay healthy and fostered a sense of community and togetherness among Qatar’s diverse population, said an official at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) — which has been instrumental in promoting  healthy lifestyles through a number of initiatives.

“National Sport Day is a phenomenally effective tool for keeping health and physical fitness at the forefront of people’s minds. Making time for exercise can sometimes be difficult, so having a day completely dedicated to taking part in sport is a great boost for the community,” Nesreen Al Rifai, WCM-Q’s Chief External Affairs and Development Officer, told The Peninsula.  “Over many years, Qatar National Sport Day has not only inspired people to get active and stay healthy but has also fostered a wonderful sense of community and togetherness among Qatar’s diverse population,” she added.

Al Rifai said the day brings everyone together in a celebration of sport and exercise as well as motivating people to maintain good health.

“Everyone at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar and its flagship health campaign 'Sahtak Awalan' (Your Health First) is a keen supporter of Qatar National Sport Day as we strive to empower everyone in Qatar to live their healthiest lives through our many innovative programmes and events,” she said.  WCM-Q’s latest initiative Fitness Box which is located at Al Rayyan Park (Green Carpet) and Airport Park (Old Airport area) offer sustainable, solar-powered installations crafted from upcycled shipping containers and equipped with giant screens to broadcast tailor-made free fitness classes led by internationally renowned instructors to the community.

The Fitness Box classes are being run from 3pm to 9pm today. The innovative Fitness Box initiative has been designed to inspire all members of the community to take regular exercise and to realise that keeping fit and healthy is very important.

The Fitness Box provides free exercise workouts, and the locations in parks provide a safe open-air space that allows participants to maintain social distancing while watching the fitness instructors on the giant screen.
