Asian Championship: Qatar volleyball team leaves for Japan

Doha: Qatar’s National Volleyball Team yesterday left for Japan where they will take part in the 21st Asian Men’s Championship to be held from September 12-19.

The Qatari team led by Argentinian coach Camilo Soto, completed its preparation before departing yesterday for Chiba. The preparation period included an external camp in Slovenia which was held from August 16 to 28.

The draw for the Asian Championship placed Qatar in the first group, which includes Japan, India and Bahrain, this group was classified as one of the strongest groups in the tournament where Qatar team will start their journey against Japan on September 12, then the Indian team on the 13th, before concluding their matches in the first round on September 14 against the Bahraini national team.

The draw for the Asian Championships placed the defending champion Iranian team in the second group along with teams of Pakistan, Thailand and Hong Kong, the third group included the teams of Australia, runners-up of the last edition, China, Sri Lanka and Kuwait, and the fourth group includes the teams of South Korea, China Taipei, Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia.

This is the first Asian participation for the Qatari team since the last foreign participation in 2019, which was held in the Iranian capital Tehran, the team was supposed to participate in the Gulf Games last year 2020, but the tournament was postponed due to the current health conditions imposed by the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19).
