Doha, Qatar: Qatar Foundation partner campus Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) is poised to achieve preeminence in the region building on the strength of existing programmes and expertise. The campus aims at becoming a powerful hub for teaching, learning, and research that meets the unique needs of the Global South and the changing global economy, said GU-Q’s newly appointed Dean Dr. Safwan Masri.

Speaking to media at the GU-Q campus yesterday, Dr. Masri shared the plans to further elevate GU-Q’s profile by developing additional programmes, hosting conferences, book launches, dean’s distinguished lecture series and diplomat and scholar in residence programmes.

“GU-Q campus is committed to not just to provide education, but to also learn from partners on the ground, and transmit that knowledge to the Washington, DC campus, contributing to further globalisation of the institution. GU-Q plans to attract faculty and students from the DC campus to study in Qatar, and design key programmes of regional interest, including minor and certificate programmes in international law, arts, heritage and cultural programmes, and environmental ethics,” said Dr. Masri.

He indicated that new programmes are likely to be introduced in the areas of international security, global economics, and America’s relationship with the region, in partnership with local institutions and Georgetown’s Washington, DC campus.

GU-Q is also planning to start career services and external engagement to develop important strategic partnerships and career placements.

“Developing relations with the media is also a priority,” said Dr. Masri, adding that the campus will provide a media-friendly database of GU-Q’s world class experts in a variety of areas, including on arts, and culture, as well as political scientists, historians and the full breadth of faculty across Georgetown University.

Dr. Masri also announced a series of upcoming conferences including America and the Middle East: 20 Years after the War in Iraq; Confronting the Impasse: Doha Symposium on Afghanistan and the Region; Water Security in the Gulf: Developing a 50 to 100-year Vision; International Law and the Global South; and Global Energy Cultures: How Energy Shapes Our Everyday Life.
