Doha: Joe Jones saved his best for the last.

The Welshman fired a stunning five-under-par 67 to win the 37th Qatar Open Golf Amateur Championship by two strokes at the Doha Golf Club (DGC) yesterday.

Jones, who carded 73 and 75 in the first two rounds, took full advantage of improved conditions at the course to finish with an aggregate of one-under 215.

With the title triumph, the Wales’ golfer sealed his place in the prestigious Commercial Bank Qatar Masters 2023 that will take place from October 26 to 29.

As the title race was wide open ahead of final round, golfers produced impressive performances at the DGC that experienced comparatively less wind on the decisive day.

It was a Welsh one-two as James Nash was paid for his consistent performance in the competition.

He claimed second place after carding a two-under-par 70 for a total of 217.

England’s Reece Goodyear, who led the first two rounds, shot 73 on the decisive day to finish third, aggregating 219 while DGC’s Calum Fitzgerald, who had a shaky start with 77 on Thursday, fired another 72 yesterday to finish in the fourth position with a total of 221.

South-Korea born Russian Daniil Sokolov (227), England’s Sam Epstein (227), Tej Ganjavarapu (228) and Olivier van Lelyveld (229) received special prizes courtesy top 10 finish.

Qatar’s Ali Al Shahrani (230), who won the title two years ago, struggled on the decisive day carding 82 to finish 11th.
