Ministry honours 24 winners of ‘Read and Express’ contest

Doha: The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has honoured 24 winners of ‘Read and Express’ competition held under 2nd Reading Olympiad for the academic year 2020-21. 

The winning students are from all grades of government and private schools. The honouring ceremony, held at the headquarters of the ministry, was attended by Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Affairs, Fawzia Al Khater and Assistant Undersecretary for Primate Education Affairs, Omar Al Nama.

Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Shared Services Affairs, Ali Al Buainain; Director of Curriculum and Learning Resources Department, Rima Abu Khadija; Director of Public Relations and Communication Department, Omar Al Yafei and Director of Early Education Department, Maryam Al Buainain also attended the ceremony.

This competition consists of two main parts, the first is under the title ‘Read’, a diverse reading for the participant in the competition for a group of Arabic and English books and references in proportion to their reading inclinations, provided that his reading includes several types of books that develop and strengthen national belonging, instil societal and moral values, and address historical and religious issues.

The competitions emanating from the project include reading in Arabic and English taking into account the type of school, so that the percentage of Arabic books is not less than 70% of the total reading in public schools, Arab private schools and 50% in international schools.

As for the ‘Express’ competition, students who achieve the highest standards in the ‘Read’ competition are transferred to participate in the ‘Express’ competition, where students can express their understanding of reading in a variety of ways that match their talents. The Reading Olympiad project aims to encourage and promote reading, in addition to spreading the culture of reading among students, and instilling the habit of reading among them. The project contributes to the service, development and advancement of society, and contributes to achieving Qatar National Vision 2030. Rima Abu Khadija  said that about 1,100 students qualified for the ‘Read’ competition and about 250 students out of them qualified ‘Express’ competition.

She lauded their efforts, perseverance, and interest in reading and working to develop their abilities by expressing their understanding of what was read in line with their hobbies and interests.

Reading Olympiad project, which is held annually, includes a ‘Reading Week’ which comes within the celebrations of the World Book Day and Arab Day for Libraries. The ‘Read and Express’ competition targets students of government and private schools, in four categories: students of the lower primary grades (first - second - third), students of the upper primary classes (fourth - fifth - sixth), preparatory school students and secondary school students. The winners of the first five places in each category are honoured.
