Doha: Qatar’s Waleed Al Sharshani rallied from behind to share the lead overnight leader Keerati Bualong of Thailand in the laser class at Sail Qatar here yesterday.
Both Waleed and Keerati, have a net score of seven points, in the five day championship which will end tomorrow
Bob Good of New Zealand and Mohamed Al Jaidah of Qatar are in close pursuit of the two top place sailors and are in the third and fourth place.
In optimist, Voravong Rachrattanaruk of Thailand leads followed by compatriots Suthon Yampinid and Chanokchon Wangsuk.
A record number of 28 sailors are competing in the optimist class.
In the other Sail Qatar categories, the pair of Keith Debrasse and Liza Acadsiki lead in Hobie 16 while Qatari pair of Hassan Al Baker and Mohamed Ismail are in the second spot.
In 470 category, Navee Thamsoontorn and Nut Butmarasri of Thailand and Dawn Liu and Joan Poh share the lead followed by the pair of Patteera Mee Yousam Sen and Nichapa Wai Wai.
The five-day championship ends tomorrow and is organised by the Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation (QSRF).
In Qatar Match Racing Cup, the second event which forms part of the Qatar International Regatta, Maximilian Khyan Tat Soh of Singapore bounced back to the top spot pushing Sergey Musikhin of Russia from the summit position.
Sailors from 14 countries are taking part in the Sail Qatar, while five countries are represented at the Qatar Match Racing Cup.
Besides hosts Qatar the other countries taking part are Brazil, Czech Republic, Germany, India, Italy, Jordan Kuwait, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, Thailand, UAE and United Kingdom
In Qatar Match Racing the following countries are seen in action: Bahrain (two teams), Russia, Singapore, Qatar (two teams) and Tunis.
