LONDON: Prime Minister of Britain David Cameron on Friday promised that his administration will accept thousands more Syrians from UN-sponsored refugee camps and provide extra financial aid.
"given the scale of the crisis and the suffering of the people, today I can announce that we will do more - providing resettlement for thousands more Syrian refugees," Cameron told reporters after his meeting in Madrid with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano.
Britain has already accepted 5,000 refugees. Cameron added that his government will make an announcement next week on a resettlement scheme for the refugees.
The UK plans to take refugees directly from Syrian camps, to provide them with a safe route to the UK instead of the hazardous journeys to Europe that has taken the lives of thousands of Syrians.
The UN's top envoy for refugees on Friday said EU nations must develop a common strategy to resettle up to 200,000 refugees who have already made it to Europe, adding that "no country can refuse to do its part.
