Doha: The Ministry of Municipalities and Environment has urged people in Qatar to report to them if they find any red palm weevils on date palms, which they described as a serious scourge of palm trees.
Red palm weevil is a red insect with a sensor horn and a repressive end of 2.5 cm - 2.5 cm and 1.2 cm wide. It has a long hose with a solid body with dark spots.
The ministry noted that those who see these weevils to contact the Agricultural Affairs and Plant Quarantine department on 44261729-44261728
Red palm weevil larvae can excavate holes in the trunk of palm trees up to a metre long, thereby weakening and eventually killing the host plant. As a result, the weevil is considered a major pest in palm plantations, including coconut palm, date palm and oil palm.
