Education Ministry organises event to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Doha, Qatar: Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) organised an event titled: We're here for them, to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities that falls annually on December 3.

Organised by the MoEHE's Department of Nurseries in the presence of Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education HE Dr. Ibrahim bin Saleh Al Nuaimi, the event highlighted the importance of caring for children with disabilities in their early years, in addition to raising the awareness of nurseries' affiliates of the importance of providing essential care for this segment of children as part of their rights.

In addition, the event stressed the importance of encouraging parents to be aware of the need to provide nurseries and those who take care of children with disabilities with medical reports attested from government agencies in the State of Qatar to be able to take appropriate measures with respect to taking care of kids at nurseries.

The event featured the State of Qatar's experience in educating persons with disabilities, along with the mechanism of identifying kids with learning disabilities, followed by a workshop on the reality of children with disabilities in the State of Qatar's nurseries, social story strategy for behaviour modification, responsibilities of parents toward children with disabilities, in terms of Sharia and social respects, as well as the importance of identifying kids with learning disabilities in primary school classes.

Furthermore, the workshop focused on the crucial indicators for pre- nursery and pre- school kids, success stories of disabled individuals who made achievements in numerous fields in Qatar, in addition to showcasing a theatrical show and an exhibition that featured artworks of creative students with disabilities that ranged between drawing to embroidery and knitting.

Assistant Undersecretary for Private Education Affairs at MoEHE, Omar Abdulaziz Al Naama, affirmed that this day is celebrated to shine a spotlight on the rights of persons with disabilities, along with their significant role in the community, in addition to underlining the importance of providing an environment conducive for them to realise their potential and contribute to building the present and the bright future.

Marking this day is not merely a temporary event, but rather to underline the rights of this segment to proper care and inclusion, Al Naama noted, emphasizing that persons with disabilities are not merely individuals who need support, but a source of inspiration and excellence.

For her part, Director of the Nursery Department at MoEHE, Ghada Laram, underscored the importance of empowering this segment of persons who wield energy and potential to be able to rise, innovate and positively impact the society, who can inspire force, patience and determination from these energies.

The participants unanimously agreed on the rights of persons with disabilities to good education, along with the engagement of all family members, Ministry of Public Health and educational institutions in providing all possible facilitations for their success, advancement and inclusion in the society.
