University of Doha for Science and Technology President Dr. Salem Al Naemi inaugurating the Career Fair along with other officials, yesterday.
The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) has recorded three times the number of students enrolled in the institution over the last two years, Dr. Salem Al Naemi, President of UDST, said yesterday.
The former College of the North Atlantic - Qatar (CNA-Q) became Qatar’s first applied university earlier this year after an Amiri decision established UDST.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of UDST’s Career Fair, Dr. Al Naemi said the school’s mandate is to meet industry needs and ensure students are equipped with skills to cope with the labour market demands.
“We have noticed our number of students has tripled. Two years ago, we were almost 2000 students, today, we have almost 6,100 students -- and we have realigned most of our programmes. Our mandate is really to listen to the industry. What are the needs and the skills required because the skills are changing, and that is why we always look into our programmes, ensuring that we have incorporated these skills in our curriculum to serve the industry and to make it easier for students to get a job,” Dr. Al Naemi said.
Commenting on the Career Fair, the UDST president said it was an opportunity for students to scope the industries of their choice for permanent openings or internships.
The two-day Fair provided employment and sponsorship opportunities and allowed visitors to delve into the professional world, inquire about the essential skills employers look for, and discover the vacancies available in the marketplace.
“The purpose is to have a platform where supply and demand are together to serve the students. Our goal is to prepare students for employment, and their goal (employers) is to grab the student to fill a job opening within the company or the government.”
According to a statement, UDST will hold the career fair yearly to provide a space for students, alumni, and employers to interact, network, share information, and explore numerous career opportunities.
“As an applied university, our focus is on engineering. So that’s why we have a lot of representatives from the engineering industry. However, medical representatives like HMC, PHCC and Sidra take many of our students on full employment or internship.
“Also, we have others in HR, digital marketing or accounting, and IT. Other institutions like Qatar Foundation and Qatar University also participated; we complement each other.”
More than 50 companies participated in the Fair, which saw a massive turnout of students and alumni.
