Doha: Qatar University (QU) has established the Qatar University Holding Company to embrace the creative ideas of faculty members, students and researchers, within the framework of supporting Qatar’s orientation towards a knowledge-based economy, said QU President Dr. Hassan Rashid Al Derham.
Addressing the QU annual meeting yesterday, Dr. Al Derham said the university continues its efforts to move the educational process from traditional methods to learning based on understanding, research, innovation, thinking and experimentation, as part of its role to enhance the country’s efforts in the transition towards a knowledge economy.
He affirmed the university’s endeavour to open new horizons for students and professors and develop methods and tools to reach the top of creativity, competition, excellence in results, planning for the future, security in information, and the ability to devise appropriate solutions to challenges. He added that in order to make results a practical and productive application on the ground, instead of just theoretical ideas that do not resonate, the university established Qatar University Holding Company for Technology to embrace and develop the ideas of researchers and students and to establish new micro, small and medium companies or start-ups that will be a nucleus for creating job opportunities and achieving a knowledge-based economy.
The President of Qatar University hoped that the company will play an important role in achieving the sustainable development of the university and the country, affirming that this trend is at the heart of Qatar University’s new strategic plan, which has been prepared and will constitute a qualitative leap and an important stage in the university’s history and development.
He pointed out that the university will hold workshops and extended sessions to agree on the new plan to be approved by the Board of Trustees during the current year, and the start of its implementation from the next academic year, as the university is about to complete the work of its strategy 2018-2023 (from reform to transformation), which achieved the goals set for the past five years.
He said Qatar University has established an office for digital education and e-learning in recognition of its paramount importance and its great impact in this era of tremendous technical and technological development. It can be optimally employed to move the educational process from traditional methods to learning based on understanding, research, innovation, thinking and experimentation.
He also noted that the university, during the COVID-19 pandemic, achieved more and moved toward the aspirations it set.
