We stand together for a free and sovereign Ukraine

It has been three years since Russia launched its illegal and unprovoked full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine, an invasion that not only undermined the peace and security of our nation but also posed a direct challenge to the international order and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter. Ukraine, however, stands resolute in its fight for freedom and sovereignty, and it does so with the steadfast support of its international partners and allies, including the State of Qatar.

The war and its consequences

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, marked a new chapter in a war that had started years earlier with Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the destabilization of Ukraine’s eastern regions. This aggression has led to devastating loss of life, widespread destruction, and severe violations of international law. Russia’s actions represent an attack not only on Ukraine but on the very foundation of global security and peace. The Russian invasion has resulted in catastrophic consequences, including the killing of over 599 children and the injury of 1,762 more, with at least 19,546 reports of illegal deportation or forced transfer of Ukrainian children, the true number likely much higher. These crimes are a direct violation of international law and human rights conventions.

The Ukrainian people continue to show exceptional bravery and resilience, defending not only their homes but the principles of democracy, sovereignty, and human dignity. The fight we face is one for these core values—values that are universal and must be upheld by the international community. Ukraine’s defenders, from the heroes of Zmiinyi Island to those at Azovstal and Bakhmut, have shown an unwavering commitment to freedom, at great cost. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Russian forces have caused significant destruction, damaging or destroying over 166,000 residential buildings, 943 medical institutions, 667 cultural and religious buildings, and 3,864 educational institutions, alongside 525 sites of Ukraine’s sports infrastructure. The war’s devastating impact on civilians, especially children, is a stark reminder of the need for continued international support.

International support and Qatar’s role

Ukraine’s defense of its sovereignty has been met with unwavering support from the international community. In particular, Qatar has played a crucial role in providing humanitarian assistance, facilitating diplomacy, and advocating for the protection of human rights. Qatar’s commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty is a testament to the power of solidarity in the face of aggression. Qatar’s unwavering stance supports the preservation of the international order based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

From the very beginning of the war, Qatar has stepped up as a key partner in Ukraine’s humanitarian efforts. Qatar’s leadership has been instrumental in the safe return of Ukrainian children who were forcibly deported by Russia. The humanitarian missions conducted by Qatar have successfully reunited 62 children with their families, demonstrating the country’s commitment not only to Ukraine but to universal human rights and the well-being of the most vulnerable. This stands as an example of Qatar’s dedication to justice and peace in the region.

Qatar’s involvement has been vital in advancing Ukraine’s Peace Formula, as proposed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Qatar has consistently advocated for peaceful conflict resolution, emphasizing that the sovereignty of Ukraine must remain non-negotiable. The country’s role in the global conversation on the return of deported Ukrainian citizens, especially children, highlights Qatar’s determination to ensure that international law is upheld.  Furthermore, Qatar has consistently used its position on the world stage to advocate for Ukraine. Its support in the United Nations has been crucial in ensuring that the issue of Ukraine’s territorial integrity remains at the forefront of global discussions. Qatar’s diplomatic efforts have played a critical role in drawing international attention to the situation in Ukraine, particularly regarding its right to sovereignty and security.

The importance of continued support

The international community’s role in Ukraine’s fight for freedom is more crucial than ever. While Ukraine has shown immense strength, it cannot face this battle alone. As we continue to defend not just our sovereignty, but rule based world order for the humanity, we count on our allies—countries like Qatar—to intensify their support. This also includes economic and humanitarian assistance, which are essential for Ukraine’s survival and eventual reconstruction.

The international community must continue to push for a peaceful resolution to this war, with Ukraine’s victory being a top priority. But for peace to endure, we must ensure that the terms of peace reflect Ukraine’s rightful independence and territorial integrity. The principle of “peace through strength” must remain central to our strategy, as only a strong Ukraine can guarantee lasting peace. We cannot relent in our pressure on Russia to change its goals and end its unjust war.

Ukraine’s victory is not just a victory for us; it is a victory for the world. A victory for the values of freedom, democracy and human dignity. It is a victory for international law and the rules-based international order. And it is a victory for every nation that values peace and justice. The world’s unity in support of Ukraine is a testament to the power of collective action in the face of aggression.

We stand together with our international partners, including Qatar, as we fight for a future where Ukraine is free, sovereign, and whole. A future where no country can impose its will upon another. A future where the world is united in support of peace, security, and justice for all. Together, we can shape a world where tyranny has no place, and the right to self-determination is protected for every nation.
