Qatar’s resilient construction sector

Qatar’s construction sector has successfully overcome the impact of COVID-19 challenges. Many indicators have validated the strength of this sector. The recent data released by the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) have showed that the number of building permits issued in September by municipalities in Qatar has increased by 18 percent to 736, compared to 626 building permits issued during the previous month in August.  The number of building permits issued in June by municipalities in Qatar had increased by 111 percent compared to previous month. The total number of permits issued by the municipalities reached 734 in June, compared to 348 in May this year. Building permits and building completion certificates data is of particular importance as it is considered an indicator for the performance of the construction sector which in turn occupies a significant position in the national economy. The data related to building permits issued during 2020 demonstrate that the construction sector has shrugged-off the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak and it is set to move ahead at full speed in the current year. The growth momentum of Qatar’s construction sector is likely to continue in the medium term. Qatar’s construction market is expected to reach a value of $76.98bn by 2026, according to a report by Mordor Intelligence- market intelligence and advisory firm.  The construction market is expected to witness a compound annual growth rate of 10.54 percent over the period of 2021-2026. The construction market of Qatar was valued at $42bn in 2017. Qatar experienced a rapid development in all its industries, due to the huge revenues generated by the country’s oil and gas exports. Qatar’s infrastructure, construction and real estate industries have been no different, benefiting from the increased demand across all the segments, from residential and office spaces to public transport and hydrocarbon developments.  Figures from the Planning and Statistics Authority have showed that the construction sector has made a strong comeback in the last part of the year. Total 972 building permits were issued in the December, which was the highest figure in 2020. The growth in construction sector is supported by Qatar’s buoyant real estate sector.  As per the Ministry of Justice report, real estate sector witnessed deals worth QR2.57bn in March compared to QR1.77bn in February this year, recording a surge of around 45 percent. Qatar’s construction sector will continue to witness further growth in the coming years.
