Japan’s midfielder Takefusa Kubo
Doha, Qatar: Takefusa Kubo is confident Japan are well prepared for their AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 Round of 16 tie against Bahrain at the Al Thumama Stadium today.
Japan advanced to the knockout stage after a second place finish in Group D while Bahrain topped Group E, finishing ahead of South Korea.
Kubo, who featured in all three group stage matches, said Japan have their game plan ready as they look to take one step closer to a record-extending fifth AFC Asian Cup title.
“We have witnessed some teams, who were favourites, stumble in the knockout stage and that’s something we aim to avoid tomorrow. Preparation is key for us,” said the Real Sociedad midfielder.
“As we enter the knockout stage, our focus doesn’t need to be on how other teams play. Our primary concern is our own performance. It’s not about what the opponents will do in the match but rather it’s about concentrating on what we can do.”
“In the (group stage) match against Iraq (which Japan lost 2-1), we conceded an early goal, and that’s a mistake we don’t want to repeat. Bahrain’s approach might be the same as Iraq, so learning from past errors is crucial.
“Addressing Bahrain’s physicality, we’ve encountered physical teams in this tournament, and it’s not an issue for us to face them. We’re prepared for the challenges that come with it.
“I’ve faced plenty of Asian teams, both with club and country. I bring experience to the table, and I have no reservations playing against these teams. We’re confident in our abilities and ready for the task at hand.”
