Doha, Qatar: Match-winner Nizar Al Rashdan lauded Jordan’s unbreakable spirit after they came from behind to edge Iraq 3-2 to snatch a berth in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 quarter-finals on Monday.
The midfielder unleashed a spectacular curling shot from outside the box in the seventh minute of added time, the second of two goals Jordan scored after the completion of regulation time, to set up a clash with Tajikistan on Friday.
“Thanks to the collective effort of all our players, we secured the victory,” said the 24-year-old.
“Although we led in the first half, we faced some challenges in the second but we stuck to our game plan and emerged victorious. We want to thank our fans for continuing to show their support.”
Yazan Al Naimat put Jordan in front just before half-time but Iraq turned the game around within the space of eight minutes in the second half through strikes from Suad Nafiq and Aymen Hussein.
Just when it seemed Jordan were heading out, Yazan Al Arab equalised in the fifth minute of added time before Al Rashdan’s memorable contribution sent the Jordan fans into ecstasy in the Khalifa International Stadium.
“I take pride in being the catalyst for the celebratory atmosphere after our victory. Despite facing a challenging second half, our team maintained high focus, with allthe players rallying behind each other.
“We remained strong and showed determination to win in the last moments of the game.”
Standing between Jordan and a first ever appearance in the AFC Asian Cup semi-finals are tournament debutants Tajikistan, who defeated United Arab Emirates on Sunday, with the progress of the Central Asian side noted by Al Rashdan.
“Tajikistan have undergone significant development, especially in the Asian Cup and preceding matches.
“Having played against them before, we understand the challenges they pose. Our focus will remain elevated as we put today’s match behind us and aim to reach the semi-finals.”
