More than 10,000 Qatar residents have made their way through Qatar Biobank since its launch in 2012, with each and every participant making significant contributions to the health of local population.

The three-hour process is a winning proposition for all involved. Qatar Biobank, a member of Qatar Foundation, adds to its growing supply of health information and biological samples. And participants get feedback on their health and lifestyle habits—while strengthening Qatar’s future at the same time.

After registering to participate, volunteers first speak with a nurse at Qatar Biobank’s facility located in Hamad Medical City. During the interview, nurses will ask about the participant’s family medical history, current health issues, lifestyle and other information.

A series of measurements and tests follow, including an exercise test, grip strength assessment, weight and body fat measurement, electrocardiogram (ECG) test, retinal eye imaging, iDXA scan for the whole body, Vic-order artery stiffness measurement, and an ultrasound scan of the carotid arteries. Participants also contribute samples of their blood, saliva and urine.

All participants have the opportunity to receive feedback approximately two weeks after the initial visit, although participants who are found to have serious or life-threatening conditions are notified immediately. If necessary, participants will be referred to an appropriate clinic within Hamad Medical Centre for further diagnosis or treatment.

“The depth and breadth of knowledge and medical data collected by Qatar Biobank is building an invaluable platform for experts to undertake high-quality biomedical research, and advise policy-makers and healthcare providers about disease prevention and treatment,” says Dr Asmaa Al Thani, Chairperson of the Qatar Genome Programme Committee and Board Vice Chairperson of Qatar Biobank.

At present, various diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer are prevalent among the local population and region. Qatar Biobank was established to better understand the causes of these major diseases and advance down the road towards personalised medicine.

To ensure patient privacy, only approved medical researchers will have access to Qatar Biobank’s information and samples. Their research credentials, the standing and reputation of their institutions and the worthiness of their research will be thoroughly assessed. Only researchers planning high-quality and beneficial research will be given access after being assessed by Qatar Biobank’s research committee.

Even then, those given access will never be told who the  participants are. All data is completely anonymised, so privacy will be protected at all times. Also, researchers will only be given the data sets relevant to their specific research areas.

“Qatar Biobank will only succeed if the local population continues to provide the necessary samples and information researchers need to develop strategies to create more efficient and effective healthcare solutions,” says Dr Nahla Afifi, Education and Scientific Manager, and Acting Director of Qatar Biobank. “By spending just a few hours with us, participants will be making an active and important contribution to Qatar’s development.”

Participation in Qatar Biobank is open to Qataris over the age of 18, and adult expatriates who have lived in Qatar for at least 15 years. Its main facility in Hamad Medical City recently expanded its capacity, enabling more visitors to pass through the approximately three-hour process each day.
