The eighth edition of the Qatar International Agricultural Exhibition (AgriteQ) and second International Environmental Exhibition (EnviroteQ) concluded yesterday at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC).
The exhibition was attended by 200 exhibitors, 42 countries, and more than 65 Qatari farms. The MME announced that the next edition of the exhibitions would be organised from March 22-26, 2022.
The Minister of Municipality and Environment H E Eng. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie recognized several farmers and sponsors. During the exhibition, the MME and participating entities signed 150 contracts and Memoranda of Understanding. The agreements will increase production, move Qatar closer towards self-sufficiency, achieving food security, and conducting joint research in various fields and related sectors. The Director of the Public Relations Department at MME, Abdullah Al Falasi, praised this year’s exhibition’s success despite the COVID-19 challenges.
Vice-Chairman of the Organising Committee Yousuf Khalid Al Khulaifi also hailed participants’ efforts in the event’s success. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) announced the launch of Qatari Agricultural Calendar and a plan to establish the first factory of plants in the Middle East.
“Within the framework of Qatar’s orientation in achieving self-sufficiency in several fields, Ministry of Municipality and Environment launched Qatari agricultural calendar to link between climate effects and impacts on plants along the year,” the MME tweeted yesterday. The book was authored by the Director of Public Parks at the MME Mohamed Ali Al Khouri.
The calendar contains ways to take advantage of the days in the year and know the plants’ needs in the various seasons, the MME said in a series of tweets. The Agricultural Research Department of the Ministry and MITSUI & Co International has agreed to set up the first and enormous factory of plants in the Middle East in Qatar.
The factory would be set up at Al Utouriya Area, covering over 3000 square metres, the Ministry’s infographics read. “In light of the challenges that face Qatar’s agricultural production, the first and enormous factory of plants in the Middle East was announced between the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) and MITSUI & Co International,” the tweet read.
The factory aims to prepare professional cadres for modern production methods at plant factories, increasing the selfsufficiency rates by raising local vegetable production and tackling the challenges of dryland farming in Qatar.
According to the MME, the factory will see 95 percent water saving, high production in small areas, reduce harvest periods, produce greens and productive crops all year round, and promote long-term plants.
