World Congress of Criminology begins tomorrow in Doha

Doha: For the first time in the Middle East, Doha will host the 19th World Congress of Criminology tomorrow which will continue till  October 30.

The three-day event will discuss the most relevant issues of crime and delinquency based on the theme ‘Science, Technology and Teaching in Criminology’.

Under the patronage of Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, who is also Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Police College, the conference is being organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, represented by the Police College; the Faculty of Law, Qatar University; and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

In a press conference held on Thursday at the Officers Club of the General Directorate of Civil Defence, Brigadier Dr Mohammed Abdullah Al Muhanna Al Marri, Director General of Police College said: “The World Congress of Criminology is being held in the Middle East for the first time. Around 125 work papers from 40 countries from Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia and the Americas will be presented as well as 14 participants from Qatar, will attend the Congress.

Al Marri also said that a number of academics, researchers, professionals and policymakers will meet to discuss the most relevant issues of crime and delinquency based on the theme ‘Science, Technology and Teaching in Criminology’. 

The 19th World Congress of Criminology is being organised within the framework of the implementation of the outcomes of the Doha Declaration issued at the 13th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and the preparation for the 14th Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice to be held in Japan in 2020, he said. 

Brigadier Al Marri pointed out that all participants would benefit from the topics to be discussed relating to technology, crime prevention and criminal justice policies in the era of globalisation.

“Particular emphasis will be on new crimes such as cybercrime, terrorism, and working on the effective ways to prevent and respond to such crimes,” he said.

He also stressed that one of the objectives of the Congress is to discuss ways to address the new crimes through methods of combating, legal legislation and criminal justice, further pointing out that the State of Qatar was the first to issue the Anti-Terrorism Law, which was issued in 2004.
