Doha: Qatar’s Mubarak Shannan and Rashed Nawaf yesterday claimed a silver medal at the third GCC Games after going down in the men’s tennis doubles final in Kuwait yesterday.
At the Sheikh Jaber Al Abdullah International Tennis Complex, the Qatari duo lost to Saudi Arabia’s Ammar Al Hogbani and Saud Al Hogbani 7-5, 6-4 in the final to finish as runners-up in the event. Nawaf, however, failed to win individual medal after a defeat to Saud 6-4, 6-1 in men’s singles bronze medal match.

Meanwhile, Qatar also claimed a bronze medal yesterday when Ahmad Al Mohannadi and Mohammed Hussein paired up to beat Bahrain’s Rashed Rashed and Sayed Ali 11-4, 11-8, 12-10 in men’s table tennis doubles match for a bronze medal.

In handball, Qatar outclassed the UAE 29-21 to record their second consecutive victory in the team competition. After a dominating the first period which they led 14-8, Al Annabi did well to hold their opponents to claim maximum points in the competition.
Qatar, who defeated Saudi Arabia in their first match, will meet Kuwait in their next match of the round-robin event tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Qatar also continued their good show in padel beating Saudi Arabia 3-0 for second successive win.
Mohammed Abdulla and Abdulaziz Al Kuwari combined to draw first blood in the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Abdulrahman Al Azzam and Sattam Al Shahrani.
Mohammed Al Kuwari and Abdulla Al Hijji made it 2-0 for Qatar after defeating Hassan Al Abdullah and Musaeed Al Azzam 6-0, 6-1, with Jabor Al Mutawa and Mohammed Al Khanji completing a dominant victory after prevailing over the Saudi pair of Omar Al Thagib and Fahad Al Sadd 6-4, 6-2.
Qatar will take on the UAE in their third match today.
Also today, Qatar will look to seal a gold medal in volleyball as they take on the UAE in their final match in the round-robin contest.
Al Annabi are strong contenders to win the title after their record run in the event that saw them defeating Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain without dropping a single game.
Qatar have so far won a total of 44 medals including 12 gold, 19 silver and 13 bronze medals. Hosts Kuwait are on top on the medals table with 28 gold medals followed by Bahrain and UAE.
