Stiff laws safeguard Qatar’s environment

Doha: The Minister of Municipality and Environment, H E Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, has said that Qatar has strict laws to protect the environment.

“Some legislations to protect the environment, like waste recycling laws and laws for monitoring air quality to keep pace with fast development of the country, are being amended,” said the Minister.

The Minister was speaking to the media persons on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of an event to mark the Qatar Environment Day which falls on February 26.

A three-day event is being organised by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment under the theme ‘Our Environment is our Future’ at Katara. The departments falling under the Environment Affairs Sector of the Ministry have set up various stalls to showcase their activities and efforts to protect the environment.

A number of activities including lectures and contests will be held to educate the visitors about the importance of environment and role of the community to protect it. 

The opening ceremony was attended by the Chairman of Central Municipal Council (CMC), Mohamad bin Hammoud Al Shafi; Vice-Chairman of CMC, Hamad Lahdan Al Muhannadi; Assistant Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Environment for Environment Affairs, Ahmad Mohamad Al Sada, and a number of directors and officials of the Ministry.  

The Minister of Municipality and Environment said that the issue of the environment is a global affair, that is why the state is harnessing all the capabilities to preserve, sustain and protect it. He pointed out that marking Qatar Environment Day is a proof of this keenness.

The Minister referred to the projects carried out by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment in this context, including the issues of environmental sustainability and biodiversity, protecting land and sea environment, monitoring of air, water and soil quality, protection of wildlife and preservation of endangered animals, climate change and initiatives by the State with regard to adaptation with and reducing the effects of climate change.

The Department of Protection and Wildlife has deployed eight units for land and five units for sea to catch environmental violations all over the country.

“Each unit, comprises  of a complete team, is assigned to their respective areas to stop the environment violations like dumping waste at unauthorised areas and cutting trees and harming the environment by other activities,” said Umar Salem Al Naimi, Director of the Department of Protection and Wildlife at the Ministry.
