Qatar and South Korean governments will work closely to build an efficient Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology which will be used in Qatar for the upcoming 2022 Fifa World Cup, Reem Mohamed Al Mansoori, Assistant Undersecretary of Digital Society Development at the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) has said.

A Qatari delegation, including Al Mansoori, had visited South Korea in January, wherein MoTC officials shared the ‘Tasmu Smart Qatar’ strategy to their Korean counterparts. Korean officials, on the other hand, also presented to the Qatari delegates their country’s ITS strategy.

Talking to The Peninsula on the sidelines of the recently concluded Qatar-Korea ITS Forum, Al Mansoori said: “Korea will work closely with Qatar to give their expertise on building an important and efficient ITS technology.

“This will be very important for any major events. And Korea has already hosted a very important Olympic game, so they are now ready to share with us their expertise, and how we can have an efficient ITS technology for the 2022 World Cup. We look forward to a great collaboration with Korea. We believe they have the capabilities, and we need to set the floor for them to access our local and regional market”.

During the ITS Forum, which was organised by the MoTC and the Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), Al Mansoori also invited the Korean companies to participate in the Qatar IT Conference and Exhibition (QITCOM), which will be organised by the MoTC under the patronage of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, from October 29 to November 1 at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC).

As many as 30,000 visitors are expected to attend the event which will also feature 300 international and local exhibitors, 100 local and international startups, and over 300 innovators and entrepreneurs. Over 90 international, regional, and local speakers will also discuss several key topics and trends in the ICT industry during the event.

Al Mansoori added: “We set a vision for us to be the smart solution hub for the region. And QITCOM is a platform to connect multinational businesses to local businesses and to connect them with Qatar projects, especially in the digital sector. The fifth edition this year will be different because the event will also be held jointly with the  Munich Security Conference Core Group Meeting (MSC Core Group Meeting). Both events will focus on ‘Safe, Smart Cities’. This is a very important topic, and we’ll have companies participating in the exhibition showcasing their capabilities on how to provide safe and smart solutions”.

The 4-day QITCOM event will discuss smart city security challenges and related regional initiatives, as well as strategies on universal cybersecurity by global firms. The MSC Core Group Meeting in Qatar will also bring together high-profile representatives of governments, international organisations, business, militaries, and academia to discuss regional and global security issues.
