Doha: Msheireb Properties Acting CEO, Eng Ali Al Kuwari, has announced that the Msheireb Downtown Doha is adopting an “autonomous vehicle” concept. The vehicle is a driverless concept to be deployed in delivery services around the smart city. Al Kuwari revealed this while addressing the virtual “Doha Smart Cities Summit” yesterday.

Self-driving vehicles are cars or trucks that do not require human drivers to operate them safely. They combine sensors and software to control, navigate, and drive the vehicle.

“Smart Cities proved they were capable of meeting individual and company needs much better than conventional cities in remote learning, working from home, and delivering services that rely on robots or unmanned equipment.

“In light of this, I have the honour to announce that Msheireb Properties is adopting an “autonomous vehicle” concept that can be used in many ways, especially delivery services without a driver. Further tests are being conducted in Msheireb Downtown Doha, and once they are completed, the vehicle will serve residents and tenants,” Eng Al Kuwari said.

Msheireb Downtown Doha is one of the world’s smartest and most sustainable downtown regeneration projects utilising the latest in sustainable technologies. Msheireb Downtown Doha has become a new social and civic hub in the heart of Doha with the tram system that eases movement and the Msheireb Museums, which hosts a variety of community-centric events.

Al Kuwari also highlighted how smart cities worldwide have and are still playing a massive role in tackling the coronavirus pandemic challenges.

“This is a perfect time to discuss how to tackle the current challenges. Undoubtedly, smart cities are no longer a matter of choice but rather a global trend adopted by companies and corporations to cope with the demands. Since the pandemic still impacts us, we need to collaborate to find a suitable framework to face future challenges and develop appropriate solutions.

“Since its inception, Msheireb properties took the responsibility of building an affordable and smart City, which is the Msheireb Downtown Doha, one of the smartest and most sustainable cities in Qatar and the world. Now is the time to raise awareness about smart cities, promote sustainability and encourage organisations to adopt these trends as they will benefit our nations and communities and provide solutions especially during a crisis,” he said.
