Qatar Sustainability Week 2018 to begin on October 27

DOHA: Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF), has announced that Qatar Sustainability Week 2018 will take place from October 27 to November 3, 2018 to promote Qatar’s sustainability vision.

Many embassies will also participate the activities of week-long event under which a series of informative, fun, and interactive sessions will be held to encourage the practice of sustainable living in the country.    

“Qatar Sustainability Week 2018 will kick off with the Qatar Green Building Conference, taking place from October 28-30 at The Sheraton Doha Hotel,” said Engineer Meshal Al Shamari, Director, QGBC in a press conference held yesterday at Msheireb Museums. 

He said that the conference, which is held under the patronage of H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, the Vice-Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation, will address major sustainability solutions and their impact on driving a more resilient built environment for Qatar, the Gulf region, and beyond. “Many embassies including Belgium, French and Italian will be participating to the programs of Qatar Sustainability Week this year,” Al Shamari said on the sidelines of the press conference.

The event will influence the behaviour of participants encouraging them to practice sustainable living which required to reduce carbon footprint by altering methods of transportation, energy consumption, and diet. “Over 20,000 people participated Sustainability Week last year, we expect more participants this year. They will take the experiences of participation to home to practice and make it part of their life,” he added. 

He said, for example, under the activities a hotel will open its door for a day allowing participants to do practice of healthy food and lifestyle. “Parks will be open for psychical exercises. Various activities like cleaning beaches and picking up papers and plastic items for recycling will be held,” said Al Shamari.

Qatar Sustainability Week 2018 is an annual initiative that aims to encourage people and organisations to act more sustainable. He said as a pioneer in conducting environmentally sustainable practices for green building design and development in Qatar, QGBC is looking forward to Qatar Sustainability Week 2018. “So many fantastic events will take place to promote our nation’s environmental protection and sustainability goals,” said Al Shamari. He said QGBC invites everyone in Qatar to look at programme of events, which is so varied that there really is something for everyone.” 

“A ceremony for the Qatar Sustainability Awards 2018 will take place on October 28, when 27 organisations will each receive a coveted award in a different category, recognising their efforts in furthering sustainable development and environmental protection in Qatar,” said Al Shamari.

He said that finally, a public programme of events will take place throughout Qatar Sustainability Week 2018, this year featuring a greater variety of activities than ever before. 

“Fashion and art enthusiasts are invited to attend ‘Upcycling Fashion’, an exhibition hosted by the Doha Fire Station Art Center that includes installations made from recycled clothes, while fitness fans can take part in ‘Plogging’ —picking up litter while jogging — at a group session organised by Global Shapers Doha Hub,” said Al Shamir. 

He said that rhere are also many activities for families, including a special tour of Baladna farm organized by Hotel Warwick Doha. Registration for participation could be made through website at of Qatar Sustainability Week.
