It is necessary to ensure transparency and rule of law and to fight against corruption starts from education.
“Fighting corruption is not only fighting bribery as it also includes achieving peace and justice and sustainable development. And education is very important to fight against corruption because the success is achieved in this fight when the youth say no to corruption”, said Dimitri Vlassis, Chief of the Corruption and Economic Crime Branch, United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime.
He said this during a lecture held yesterday in Sheraton Hotel Doha under the patronage of the Rule of Law and Anti–Corruption Center in cooperation with the University of Sussex. He added that the international cooperation is very important to fight corruption and the countries must cooperate with one another in this regard.
The main lecture entitled “The United Nations Convention against Corruption Implementation Review Mechanism”, which was delivered by Dimitri Vlassis. About 300 participants from 16 nationalities attended the lecture.
There are 183 states partners in this convention to fight corruption and the convention has four chapters like prevention measures and assets recovery, and the convention admits the important role of private sector in fight against corruption, he added.
“We did executive summaries of 161 countries which are partners of this convention and this will help them to see the needs and which kind of aid they need and how much they are developed in their fight against corruption”, he said adding that “we don’t care if a country is small or big and developed one because all countries for us is like a chain and when one of its link is weak then it will affect other partners”, said Dimitri Vlassis.
The United Nation convention is very important for fighting corruption and we are working with governments and private sector in this regard.
