Doha, Qatar: The Customs completed several projects to achieve digitisation this year and is working to introduce a comprehensive paperless customs system, said an expert.
In a recent Customs newsletter Eman Mekdad, Senior Information Systems expert at General Authority of Customs highlighted the most important projects that have been completed as well as future projects.
Aligning the Authority’s institutional structure to perform the best practices of customs work is one of the most important objectives of the Information Systems Department by achieving organisational goals efficiently and effectively through organisation and guidance.
Several projects have been completed which include the Strategic Digitisation Project (records and documents management) which was completed in 2021. This year Nadeeb Document Preservation Project, Enterprise Architecture Project was completed and the Audit Management Program project will be completed this year, he noted.
Highlighting the objectives of the strategic digitisation project, Mekdad said, firstly, this includes achieving the goal of ‘Paperless Customs’ which will be accomplished through electronic archiving by entering all documents through the content management programme, which results in easy access to the electronic version of the document.
Secondly, keeping paper documents in warehouses in a healthy manner according to international standards, which contributes to protecting documents from damage.
Explaining the objective of the Internal Audit Management Programme, he said, this is to introduce a comprehensive paperless customs system that will streamline and improve internal audit processes. The system will empower internal auditors with the necessary tools to perform their tasks effectively and promote a culture of continuous improvement within the organisation.
He further noted that the Nadeeb Document preservation Project was implemented at the request of the Operations and Risk Department to preserve the documents that are uploaded to the Nadeeb system and then easy to retrieve them securely and use them later for audit purposes.
“We faced many challenges in this project due to the participation of several parties in the linking process, but they were overcome and the project was completed in the second quarter of 2023. The project aims to promote digital transformation, improve efficiency, save and quickly retrieve documents and access them efficiently as well as the security scanning process for documents before saving them.”
