The 6th edition of Arab-Euro Youth Forum of the Alliance of Civilisations kicked off yesterday with the participation of 80 young people from 35 Arab and foreign countries.

The Forum, which will continue until November 26, aims at educating young people on the importance of rapprochement between peoples and civilisations and establishing a culture of respect for human rights.

Minister of Culture and Sports H E Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali attended the event accompanied with a number of ambassadors and dignitaries.

The event was held at Sharq Villa and Spa and organised by the Department of Youth Affairs at the Ministry of Culture and Sports in cooperation with the Arab League and the European Youth Council.

The Arab-Euro Forum of the Alliance of Civilisations programme includes a series of workshops in which youth will present their ideas and proposals in the field of human rights around the world through the exchange of experiences and try to give some applicable recommendations.

Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Hajri, Director of the Youth Affairs Department, said that the Forum will discuss a series of issues related to the youth in the Arab world and European region.

He also said the main topics including the role of sports in spreading the culture of rapprochement and understanding among civilisations, the role of educational institutions in promoting coexistence between cultures and civilisations and youth work and citizenship and the establishment of a culture of human rights.

Al Hajri stressed that during this Forum, the youth are being given a chance through a number of workshops and training courses, in order to empower them and to introduce them to the leadership of their work as future leaders.

Abdelmuneem Al Shaari, Representative of Arab League said that the Forum comes to encourage youth on dialogue and devoting to the culture of dialogue and human rights.

For her part, Andrea Ugrinoska, representative of Council of Europe said such events are very important in promoting intercultural dialogue and peace with young people from the Arab States and Europe.

“They (such events) are not to be mistaken with simple youth gatherings or exchanges – they facilitate a space where young people can pass on powerful messages to decision-makers in international organizations.”

At the opening ceremony, students from the Al Khor Model School presented a piece of art that reflected part of the heritage and culture of the State of Qatar.
