Doha, Qatar: The curtain fell on the European language activities organised by the Cultural Village Foundation, Katara and the Katara Centre for Public Diplomacy in cooperation with the embassies of the European Union and five European countries during May 16-June 21.
The Wednesday event marked the conclusion of the event where the Embassy of Portugal in Doha presented a lecture on Portuguese Language in the World, along with the Fado music.
It was attended by Saif Al Dosari, Katara Deputy Director General and Director of Human Resources in; Maryam Al Saad, CEO of the Katara Centre for Public Diplomacy and Secretary General of the International Public Diplomacy Network; H E Paulo Neves Pocinho, Portuguese Ambassador to Qatar, along with other officials and ambassadors.
Ambassador Pocino stressed the importance of Katara embracing the activities of the European language and its educational and promotional role in spreading the Portuguese language and introducing people to Portuguese culture by presenting Fado music, which is considered one of the most prominent symbols of Portuguese culture.
The envoy thanked Katara and the Katara Centre for Public Diplomacy for providing this valuable opportunity to spread knowledge about the Portuguese language and culture.
On the other hand, Professor Ana Silva of Hamad Bin Khalifa University gave a visual presentation highlighting the distinguished position of the Portuguese language in the world and its great influence on the Arabic language, explaining the deep interdependence between the Arab and Portuguese cultures by reviewing linguistic approaches by addressing some Portuguese words that correspond to them in Arabic. She also pointed out that Portuguese is full of words and vocabulary of Arabic origin.
The event also included the presentation of Portuguese short dialogues, and musical performances.
