Pristina: A collapsed ceiling in an abandoned home in southwestern Kosovo killed three minors, police said on Sunday, as authorities launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.

According to law enforcement, the incident occurred in the village of Jablanica on Saturday when part of the structure's ceiling collapsed with three teenagers inside.

Local police spokesman Sheremet Elezaj said an emergency services team was sent to the location "immediately after learning about the incident".

The "team only confirmed their deaths at the scene", Elezaj added.

Kosovo prosecutors said in a statement that "all investigative actions are being taken" and noted that the bodies had been sent for autopsies.

Perparim Ademaj, a resident who joined the search for the victims, told local media that the bodies had been discovered lying under the collapsed ceiling.

Local media reported that the house had been uninhabited for decades and that the victims were aged between 14 to 15 years old.

The incident comes three months after the collapse of a train station roof in neighbouring Serbia killed 15 people.

That collapse sparked a massive anti-corruption protest movement over the alleged lack of oversight of construction projects backed by the government.
