Doha: Three acclaimed Georgian movies will be screened at Katara Drama Theatre today, and on May 25 and 29. The films are Tangerines, Dede, and Corn Island.
Cultural Village Foundation, Katara in cooperation with the Embassy of Georgia in Qatar will screen these movies at 7pm. Interested individuals may book tickets via Katara website. The movie Tangerines will be shown today.
The film was released in 2013, and was directed, written and produced by Zaza Urushadze. Filmed in Georgia, the movie was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film during the 87th Academy Awards and was among the five nominated films under Best Foreign Language Film at 72nd Golden Globe Awards.
It is starred by Lembit Ulfsak, Elmo Nüganen, Mikheil Meskhi, Giorgi Nakashidze, and Raivo Trass. Dede will be screened tomorrow. It is directed by Mariam Khatchvani and was released in 2017.
It won ten awards and received three nominations. Some of it include the UNESCO award during the 2017 Asia Pacific Screen Awards; Jury Prize Special Mention during Batumi International ArtHouse Film Festival. And Production Award winner in the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival in the US.
In the 2018 Beijing International Film Festival, it won the Best Cinematography (Tiantian Award), and a Best Film nominee. Dede also won the Best Film Jury award during the Eurasian International Film Festival also in 2018.
Corn Island will be shown on May 29. It is a 2014 drama film directed by Giorgi Ovashvili, and starred İlyas Salman and Mariam Buturishvili. It won the Crystal Globe and Prize of the Ecumenical Jury during the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in Czech Republic. It was also considered for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, making the January shortlist.
