Doha: The General Cleanliness Department of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) recorded 359 violations of public hygiene law in March 2021.

The department removed 93,652 tonnes of household wastes and 36,209 tonnes of wastes thrown at random during the month. During the period of study, 8,049 tyre wastes, 64 damaged signboards and 474 carcasses of animals were also removed.

The department also removed 716 abandoned vehicles in March.

A total of 578 new containers for collecting wastes have been provided. The department made 331 contracts for operating waste dumpsters.

As many as 18,100 waste  containers have been washed.

The department implemented 2,015 requests seeking different services during the last month. The General Cleanliness Department intensified cleaning operation ahead of Ramadan to maintain hygiene during the holy month.

A total of 1,482 cleaners, 659 drivers, 1,112 machines and 158 supervisors are participating in the operation which aims at cleaning the wastes from all municipalities. The department is dealing with 75,615 garbage containers placed across the country.

The action plan of Ramadan is to increase the number of garbage containers and replace the small containers with larger ones as per the waste quantity of densely populated areas.

The plan also includes to launch cleaning campaigns around mosques, deploy more vehicles to collect wastes from some locations and increase the number of cleaners on roads to pick of the wastes like papers, bags, water bottles and cans of soft drinks.

As per the plan, more sweeping machines have been deployed to clean highways and internal roads. The containers are also being washed regularly for hygiene purpose during Ramadan.

The quantity of wastes increases during Ramadan — not only organic wastes but solid wastes too because people prefer to change household items and furniture during Ramadan.

The General Cleanliness Department has asked people to throw wastes inside the designated containers and not besides them, and take out the household wastes ahead of the timing of wastes pickup trucks.

The department urged people to cooperate for a smooth cleaning operation during the holy month of Ramadan.
